The European Romanesque Centre (Europäisches Romanik Zentrum), also known as ERZ, in Halle (Germany), is an interdisciplinary and interfaith society. Its expertise is based on scholars of numerous subjects such as Architecture, Art History, History, Archaeology, Theology as well as Legal History of the Middle Ages of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
Furthermore, numerous monuments of medieval art and architecture in Saxony-Anhalt, and its well-known tourist link – the Romanesque Road (Straße der Romanik) – inspired regional experts and international counsellors to found the ERZ in 2006.
Since 2008, the ERZ has been a private research institute affiliated with the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, located in the southern and eastern parts of the cathedral enclosure in Merseburg, Germany.
The ERZ aims to research and communicate on the different aspects of European Romanesque art and architecture within a circle of academic experts as well as to address the broader public. Therefore, many projects, symposiums and lectures are promoted and given. Several periodicals and publications document on the society’s activity.
The ERZ also considers itself a unique platform to support the research of young scholars. For its research and educational endeavours, the society also provides a lecture hall, a steadily growing library, and accommodation facilities for visiting scholars and fellows.
