The Winckelmann Society

In preparation of the Winckelmann commemoration in 2017 and 2018, working groups and national committees have been constituted in various countries and of course Germany, organized by the Winckelmann Society (Winckelmann Gesellschaft).

The Society organizes international conferences and colloquia about Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768) as person, scholar, writer and archaeologist, his oeuvre and his role of the academic disciplines and development of arts and the Society is the governing body of the Winckelmann-Museum in Stendal, the place of birth of Winckelmann in German.

Numerous special exhibition have been presented, making a broad public acquainted with new results of research on Winckelmann, on antiquity in general as well as on the cultural history of the 18th and 19th century. (Further information: https://www.winckelmann-gesellschaft.com).
