The museum is dedicated to the writer Heinrich von Kleist (1777–1811), who was born in this city.

The museum Viadrina belongs to the museums of the city (Städtische Museen Junge Kunst und Viadrina). the collections includes various departments of art and history.

The Augustiner Museum brings together masterpieces from eight centuries of art. The museum (Archäologisches Museum Colombischlössle) shows a journey through time. The neo-Gothic villa houses female statuettes from the Stone Age, mysterious moon idols from the Bronze Age and treasures from Celtic royal tombs. Archaeological finds show how people in Freiburg lived in Roman times and the Middle Ages.

The museum (Museum für Stadtgeschichte) displays treasures from 900 years of history of Freiburg. The permanent exhibition is dedicated to monasteries and university, guilds and coinage. The two city models, which depict Freiburg with its medieval walls and gates are a good starting point. Another model illustrates construction work on the Freiburg Cathedral during the Middle Ages.  

The museum (Museum für Neue Kunst) constitutes a forum for artistic and social debates and a selection of Modernism of the 20th and 21st century is always on display.  

The museum’s collections consists of a large number of high quality religious works of art.
