The castle (Schloss Drachenburg) was listed as a monument in 1986, more than hundred years after its construction. In 1882, Baron Stephan von Sarter laid the foundation for a typical Rhinish castle of the late nineteenth century, when wealthy businessmen and Prussian aristocracy discovered the Rhine region and built (new) residences and castles. The historical architecture and splendid furnishings of this castle found much admiration amongst contemporaries.
