The Museum Otto Schafer

The Museum Otto Schäfer is dedicated to books, graphic and decorative arts. The book collection is one of the most important European private libraries. The graphic collection emphasis early printing of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, with more than 500 issues. Among the outstanding artists of the collection are Michael Wolgemut, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Baldung Grien, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Hans Holbein the Younger. The antique glass collection consists of more than 200 glass vessels and objects. The collection is fascinating not only by the beauty of the shapes and colors of antique glass, but also because of the deep insights into the history of glassmaking. The collection of contemporary graphic includes some one thousand works from the early twentieth century to today. The collection includes works by renowned artists such as Olaf Gulbransson, A. Paul Weber, Alfred Hrdlicka, Horst Janssen, Ernst Fuchs and James Demus. The Library consists of more than one hundred astronomical and mathematical books and manuscripts, including the main work of Copernicus. There are a further five thousand titles from medieval time onwards, from all fields of knowledge. This collection is combined with a major book binding collection, including bindings made of ivory, silver, pearl, velvet and silk.
