Museum Mesdag

Museum Mesdag is one of the best kept secrets of the Dutch museum world. The museum has great character and houses a superb collection of paintings by French and Dutch masters of the nineteenth century. It is the collection of the marine painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915) and his wife, the artist Sientje van Houten (1834-1909). During their lifetime they built up a large collection of paintings, drawings and objects from both the Netherlands and Asia. The Museum also exhibits works of art from other collections, featuring not only 19th century art but also modern art by contemporary artists. Mesdag was one of the leading figures of the Hague School, the most important artistic movement in the Netherlands in the 19th century. He was an enthusiastic promoter of the Hague School in Europe and the United States.
