The museum’s collections consists of a large number of high quality religious works of art. Inspired by the Musée Cluny in Paris the priest Sighardt developed the idea of a medieval museum of Christian art, which should be the clergy lesson in history and aesthetics. Today, the museum is one of the largest of its kind in the world. The collection includes a chronological path from the Romanesque to the rococo, landscapes and others paintings and sculptures of the nineteenth century. There is a large collection of coins and medals, vestments and a department with religious folk art. The museum displays inter alia Works by Erasmus Grasser, Jan Polack, Hans Leinberger, Lucas Cranach, Cosmas Damian Asam, Giandomenico Tiepolo, Henry Schoenfeldt, Johann Baptist Straub, Ignaz Günther, Alexei Jawlensky and Rupprecht Geiger.
