The Royal Museums of Fine Arts (museum voor Schone Kunsten) of Belgium hold some twenty thousand paintings, sculptures and drawings. Located in Brussels, they consist of the Ancient Art Museum (XV – XVII century), the Modern Art Museum (XIX XX century), the Wiertz Museum and the Meunier Museum. The Museum of Ancient Art houses a vast collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The Modern Art Museum houses of paintings, sculptures and drawings from the end of the eighteenth century up to the modern period. The Wiertz Museum is dedicated to Joseph Wiertz (1806-1865), a somewhat controversial artistic figure of the Belgian Romantic movement. The Meunier museum focuses in particular on the life of the master between 1875 and 1905, that second life in his own words, where he turned his talent to the social and industrial realities of Belgium through a series of paintings and drawings, then from 1885, through a return to sculpture, which consecrated his reputation as one of the greatest creative artists of the genre.
