Landesmuseum Munster

The LWL State Museum’s collections and special exhibitions form an impressive arc extending from the Middle Ages to today’s avant-garde. They are the result of more than one hundred years of collecting efforts, research, and cooperation. The museum’s collections address 1,000 years of Western culture, from the Middle Ages to the present day. The policy seeks to place Westphalian art and cultural history in a European and international context. The mission in contributing to Westphalia’s cultural identity resonates broadly with the notion of ‘a Europe of regions’, where identity is based on an understanding of origins, of history, and of cultural context. The breadth and quality of the Medieval Collection make it one of the museum’s main attractions. The collection constitutes the oldest part of the museum’s holdings, The Renaissance period is represented primarily by the work of Westphalian artists alongside older works of art. The collection of the modern gallery contains a substantial collection of paintings from German impressionism and expressionism. The museum has a large collection of contemporary art from 1960 as well.
