During the 16th and 17th centuries, Speyer was a political center of the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation. The city also headquartered the Imperial Chamber Court from 1527 to 1689 (afterwards the imperial court moved to Wetzlar) and hosted the Emperor and Imperial Estates at Imperial Diets and visitations to the Court.
