The Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux Arts) offer visitors art from antiquity to contemporary art. The antiquity department contains archaeology from Pharaonic Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, Syria and Greece and to the Roman Empire. The decorative arts department covers a period of fourteen centuries, from the 6th century to the 20th century, All disciplines are to be seen there, including works in ivory, silver and gold, enamel, glass, carpentry, cabinet-making, ceramics and an exceptional example of Art Nouveau. The sculpture collection contains works by the world’s finest sculptors from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and works from the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The works of Rodin are one of the department’s most treasured highlights. The rich painting collection includes pieces by Tintoret, Pérugin, Véronèse, Rembrandt, Pierre-Paul Rubens and Jacob Jordaens and works from Germany and Spain. The collection of 19th century paintings contains works by Dominique Ingres, Théodore Géricault, Eugène Delacroix and Gustave Courbet, Edouard Manet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh. The 20th century collection brings together masterpieces by Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Nicolas de Staël, Pierre Bonnard and Jean Dubuffet, Fernand Léger, Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon.
