The exhibition in Baden-Baden shows the impressions of travelers and artists, who visited the Rhine region in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the epoque of the grand tours and romanticism. At the same time there was a strong industrialisation, appearance of steam ships on the waterways and the Rhine in particular and development of the railway network. Famous architects, among others Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) and Friedrich August Stüler (1800-1865), create ecclectic buildings and decoration, and painters chose the Rhine as theie main subject, among others Johann Wilhelm Schirmer (1807-1863), Georg Schneider (1759-1843) and Christian Eduard Boetticher (1818-1889).
