The Gruuthuse museum in Bruges displays ‘The Invention of Bruges’. Bruges is one of the most beautiful cities of Europe. You can easily imagine that you are in the Middle Ages, walking between the meandering alleys and romantic canals. Although the inner centre of the city holds countless medieval memories, this World Heritage site, enlisted in 2000 by the Unesco, is mainly a nineteenth century invention. The exhibition offers an elucidationfor this nineteenth century creation and its inventor Louis Delacenserie. He rebuilt the city almost by himself and invented the Middle Ages again.
